Documentaries have been made, reviews have been written and cult status has been established for the outsider musician daniel johnston.
Surprisingly, no photobook of johnston's life and times has ever been put together. That may be about to change. Brooklyn-based photographer jung kim has been photographing johnston for four years and is now raising crowdfunds to get a photobook made of the work and an accompanying traveling exhibition on the road.

Most were scribbled inside his personal diaries, but in 2012 he published a full-length comic book: 'space ducks'.

Listen up and i’ll tell a story about an artist growing old i got to know daniel johnston essentially through his 1982 song the story of an artist. At the time, i didn’t know anything about the artist behind the gloomy lyrics and the mourning piano sounds. After watching the ‘the devil and daniel johnston’, a documentary which takes us on a trip into his genius mind, and after digging through his whole discography, those lyrics from 1982 seem as prophetic as ever. As a singer songwriter, his influence is unmeasurable. As an artist, it’s a realistic hope that jeremiah and the space ducks will live forever.

The johnstons have a two-car garage. On one side is the family car and on the other is daniel’s studio. The walls are covered with photos, paintings, and clippings: the beatles, star wars, king kong, godzilla, batman, the monkees, captain america, anonymous fifties pinup girls, marilyn monroe. There’s a photo of bill and mabel in there, as well as some of daniel’s album art. Shelves hold armies of toy dinosaurs, little dolls, little beatles. There’s an old piano against the wall and a table on which sit a boom box, a turntable, an ashtray, and a couple of cups of fresh cola, with no ice. On a shelf are more than a dozen notebooks filled with songs; on the piano are cluttered heaps of cheap cassettes. There’s also a microphone on a stand and a little marshall amp. There’s a rhyming dictionary and a bible. The rug on the floor is moist with grime.

1 june 2006 | by roland-104 – see all my reviews biodoc about daniel johnston, a multitalented man, a compulsively prolific cartoon artist, song writer and performer, whose bipolar disorder and drug abuse led to episodes of severe mental illness and destructive behaviors, beginning in his early 20s, in the 1980s, problems that stifled his career for many years, until consistent psychiatric care and kindly parental oversight effected a more stable course for him more recently. Now approaching age 45, johnston has made a comeback of sorts, reaching a level of artistic self control and productivity that has swept him toward unprecedented recognition.
In february 2012, lipscomb university hosted an art exhibition and a concert by the late, great daniel johnston , who died on sept. 11 following years of failing health and struggles with mental illness. I visited the exhibition, called is and always wars, a number of times and saw johnston perform a live set with a collection of student musicians at the show's reception. Fans of the artist, and nashvillians who caught the show, won't be surprised if i say the art and music were startling and magical — they were. But my favorite memory, and the first thing that came to mind when i heard about johnston's passing, was a particular moment in the show when a beaming johnston introduced "true love will find you in the end" by saying, "this is my christmas wish for you. " it was just a friday in february, back in 2012, but johnston managed to make that night strangely sacred.
As he had the opportunity to release his music wider, johnston developed a devoted cult following that included major names in music, from kurt cobain to tom waits to beck. Johnston struggled with mental health issues throughout his life, and an organization "inspiring new conversations around mental health issues" called "the hi, how are you project" was founded by gimbel and courtney blanton with the support of daniel johnston and his family. The project is named for one of johnston's albums.

Daniel johnston occupies an interesting place in popular culture. He became widely known from a t-shirt kurt cobain wore a lot in public in 1992, but had been plying his trade in the american indie music scene for about a decade by then. Releasing his mainly home recorded tapes (often with personalised, individually drawn artwork for each copy) into a listening public that was, by turns, enthralled (for the naive, songwriterly talent, the sincerity and awkward, insecure charm) or put off (by the heart-on-sleeveness, by the unabashed sentimentality), johnston had attained a level of minor fame even before cobain's endorsement. Mtv had showcased his raw talent, sonic youth had brought him to new york, and the indie rock community embraced the man, by and large, for his unique voice.
Listening to daniel johnston is a lot like playing a game of fill in the blanks. The core melodies and the song's basic structure are there, and so too is johnston's passion – be it for laurie, alongside casper the ghost and joe the boxer, or against satan. But, if you listen closely to johnston's ramshackle lo-fi recordings, lovingly released on dubbed cassettes, you can hear beatles-level ear-worms and, if you listen closer, still, a symphony. It's all there; you just have to seize it. Even posthumously, that remains part of the wonder of the "pure" yet disturbed king of outsider art: he created music so primal and so full of bumps and cracks (and tape hiss) but tunes that also were tenderly composed and bizarrely pristine.

In remembrance of daniel johnston (1961 - 2019) i think a major reason why we all enjoy music so much is because of how every song can hold a personal meaning for every individual that listens to it. The best part? the emotions aren’t limited to the lyrics. When it comes to the story of an artist by daniel johnston, i believe the beauty lies in both the performance of the song and the lyrics. Daniel, according to quite a few followers, has been known to provide both complexity and simplicity, all at once. With simple words and relatively straightforward music, the meaning you create out of the performance is essentially what’s capable of leaving you with your thoughts.
The story of daniel johnston has been well documented, which makes it tough to remember that there was a time ― almost the entire '80s ― when he was a complete unknown whose homemade cassettes were passed from convert to soon-to-be-convert. The six cds in this box set gather together his first half-dozen cassettes, originally recorded between 1980 and 1983, when johnston was in his early 20s. While these represent the earliest window into johnston's world, they're difficult to listen to without trying to contextualize, which removes a bit of the wonder of hearing these songs for the first time. And some of these tracks are quite remarkable, while others are not. The problem is the volume of material ― 131 songs is an awful lot of early daniel johnston to take, even in multiple sittings ― despite what this collection represents. The first two discs (songs of pain and don't be scared) are by far the best and each subsequent cd has less listenable, let alone essential, material. Add the quality of the some of the recordings ― done on a cheap boom box ― and this becomes for completists only. However, with some careful editing, it could make for remarkable double cd.
