Given bob marley's status as a cultural icon, it only makes sense that it's impossible not to engage in the truisms of 'what if' and/or 'if only' watching uprising live! by the time of his untimely death from cancer in may of 1981, the jamaican musician had achieved almost as much politically as artistically in his relatively short career span.

You don't have to be a weed freak to feel excited about today's news that bob marley's uprising live! album will be released on vinyl for the first time. But it helps. Eagle records and the bob marley estate have announced that, in celebration of what would have been marley’s 75th birthday, the 1981 concert album--recorded on the last tour before his death from cancer at the age of 36--will be available as a three-lp package in both black and limited-edition orange vinyl.

2020 marks the 75th birthday anniversary of reggae/cultural legend bob marley, and his estate will continue its celebration with a special 3-lp release of uprising live, available on nov. 13. Less than a year after the june 13, 1980 bob marley and the wailers performance recorded and originally broadcast on the german tv program rockpalast, the king of reggae would succumb to his long fight with cancer. Consequently, the dvd/cd set uprising live! that revives this superb showing represents not only marley and his 10-piece band at its latter-day height, but also the legend’s final tour. At nearly two hours, with 23 songs including four from the i threes, the collection is a definitive portrait of a resilient marley valiantly staring down his fate.

He was rumoured to go out on stage to say “hi†to fans with stevie wonder during his performance of master blaster but this is not true. Marley went to a few treatment clinics in the united states, boston, new york and miami (maybe mexico). Each place gave him only a month to live.

He wouldn’t see that dream fulfilled. He would be dead in a few months, his body sealed in a mausoleum back in that troubled homeland of his. But something fascinating has happened since bob marley died twenty-four years ago: he has continued. It isn’t simply that his records still sell in substantial numbers (though they do), it’s that his mission might still have a chance. It isn’t a simple mission. Marley wasn’t singing about how peace could come easily to the world but rather about how hell on earth comes too easily to too many. He knew the conditions he was singing about. His songs weren’t about theory or conjecture, or an easy distant compassion. His songs were his memories; he had lived with the wretched, he had seen the downpressors and those whom they pressed down, he had been shot at. It was his ability to describe all this in palpable and authentic ways that sustains his body of music unlike any other we’ve ever known.

Redemption song "coming in from the cold" has a slightly wheezing, croaky marley singing over a very catchy, shuffling, strummed electric guitar rhythm. The instant appeal continues on the equally singalong and endearing, almost commercial "real situation". "bad card" is a shortish but addictive groove that grows on you. There is a real energetic tunefulness and harmony about the material on here. It is light but carrying a real sad tone to marley's voice. "we and them" deals with social inequality, over a gentle shuffle with some lilting wah-wah guitar. "we no have no friends inna high society" bemoans marley. I wouldn't worry about it, bob. Did you really want their friendship? "work" is a bluesy, militant skank, a condemnation of anyone idling away their time, or jah's time, no doubt. Marley has become a spokesman for the sensible, older generation, all of a sudden, intolerant of laziness. A bit like the rolling stones on "hang fire". It is longer than the lighter tracks that came before it, and that seems quite suitable for such a solemn declaration. "if you ain't got nothing to do - work". Sings marley, as if hectoring some surly kids in the tenement yard. How things change.

I have recently purchased the re-mastered version of this title along with rastaman vibration, exodus, kaya, survival and confrontation. What a revelation! it's almost like hearing them for the first time all over again, the re-mastering really is that good. I've chosen to review uprising as i had this as a kid, on old style, scratchy vinyl and i pretty much played it to destruction. The re-mastering has the reggae version of redemption song - brilliant! other highlights include the joyful could you be loved and as a perfect opener, coming in from the cold. Pimper's paradise has bob pouring scorn on those who misuse vulnerable young women. "i feel sorry for the victim", he cries, and you can tell by the emotion in his voice that he means it, "soon their very heads will bow". This is typical bob marley, beautiful music with a serious message. Bob marley was a good man and a very religious man. He always hated injustice, prejudice and cruelty. Anyway, even if you already have old copies of these classic albums i can assure you that you would not regret updating with these magnificent re-masters. They are not expensive, they all have new bonus material and they will last forever if you treat them with the respect they deserve! enjoy! 😎.

I was excited to hear universal bringing out the box sets of the island studio albums from bob, then i saw the pricing on the sets and i scratched my headperhaps these were going to be 4lp 45rpm clarity versions cut all analogue from the original stereo master tapes by bernie grundman and pressed at qrp? nope, regular 33rpm editions, costing several hundred dollars with no pressing info, not cutting or mastering credits and no source information made available.
