When you’re designing an album cover for “the biggest band in the world,†you don’t need to put their name on it. So reasoned john kosh, the former apple records creative director who designed the iconic “abbey road†album cover depicting the beatles crossing the titular street in synchronized step.

There’s a crazy rumour that’s persisted for over 50 years that paul mccartney actually died in a car crash in 1966 and was replaced with a lookalike imposter. It was so well-known that life magazine referred to it in the title – paul is still with us – of a 1969 cover story about the musician. Mccartney himself referenced the ‘paul is dead’ myth on his 1993 album paul is live.
Before the shoot began, macmillan, a friend of john lennon and yoko ono’s, had taken paul mccartney ’s initial sketch idea of the potential cover image and added detail of exactly how the famous quartet might look on the crossing. The street sign of abbey road that adorned the back cover of the album was taken by macmillan on a junction with alexandra road that no longer exists.

That was certainly the case with the original release of his diamond dogs lp. His record label, rca, pulled the first version of the cover, which depicted a cartoonish rendition of bowie with "dog genitals" on the opposite side of the gatefold. Only a few of these worrisome issues of the album cover were released. Most later versions have the artwork doctored with airbrushing to remove the offending areas.

True, replacing “drive my car†with “i’ve just seen a face†does set up that possibility but as a lifetime folk musician i don’t really see how “it’s only love†is in more of a folk style than the country-infused “what goes on?†which it replaced, and the song that is most emblematic of the folk-rock 12-string guitar style that was in vogue in the u. S. (as exemplified by groups like “the byrdsâ€) is harrison’s “if i needed someone†(one of his best, imo), which was cut from the u. S. Album. So the capitol version of the album to me isn’t “folkierâ€, it’s just missing some of the best songs.
When you look at the cover of an album, you should know exactly how it sounds. It may seem like an odd conundrum, but the artwork of a record can often — whether subconsciously or explicitly -— affect one's experience with the music within. Maybe it's an elaborate, commissioned piece of art. Maybe it's a photo that captures just the right kind of moment. Whatever the sleeve is, we know a great one when we see it, as it intrinsically ties our emotions to the music.

Photographer colin lane met the strokes in early 2001, after being commissioned to shoot them for the face magazine. The album cover happened by chance – after hanging out on another shoot a few weeks later, lane heard the band’s art director hassling them to choose an album cover. He’d brought his portfolio with him, which included the now-infamous “ass shotâ€. The photograph, lane later revealed in interviews, was taken in either late 1999 or 2000. His girlfriend had just got out of the shower, while he was playing with an old polaroid camera. He found a chanel glove and asked her to pose. “shooting on a big shot isn’t easy: you can only shoot from a specific distance, and it’s really designed for head-and-shoulders portraits,†he explained to the guardian. “but when she slid the glove on and bent forward, i knew it was the perfect shot – simple, straightforward, graphic and just so sexy. †for fans, the image represents one of the last definable scenes in music.
