The first track on the album (not if you bought the cassette tape in the 1970s, that reordered the album and stared with good day sunshine) and apparently the first beatles lyric not concerned with that thing called lurrvve. For me this song, more than any other defines revolver. That bass line, that guitar solo are both paul, but the lyric is pithy george at his best. John said (rather grumpily) in an interview that he helped george a great deal with this track even though he wasn’t credited. album At this stage i don’t think we’ll ever know the truth around that.

Comments 129 editor’s note. This post, from way back in 2016, is one of our most popular ever. The debate, after all, is timeless. Please add your voice to the comments (and remember to play nice). The next beatles. It’s a phrase that has gotten tossed around a lot since the breakup of the world’s most famous band. For those bestowed with this accolade, it was a considerable compliment. Sometimes, it was also a curse. After all, who could possibly match the songwriting and musicianship of the beatles, let alone their humor, camaraderie, and cultural influence? there never will be another beatles, but there are bands that are “beatlesque. ” what makes a band “beatlesque?” almost every rock group (not to mention modern jazz and classical musicians) has been influenced by the beatles, so we need to narrow the criteria. First of all, let’s eliminate other british invasion bands that were coming up around the same time as the beatles. That leaves out the rolling stones, the kinks, the yardbirds, the zombies, and numerous others. Second of all, they’ve got to be a band — not just a singer/songwriter with a backing band. We’re looking for multiple songwriters and multiple vocalists. Three guitars and drums are ideal, although we’ll accept the occasional keyboard.

I have a beatles album from vee jay records that i can’t find online. Could you give me some history on the album “songs and pictures of the fabulous beatles”. This book is pretty much necessary to understand what you are hearing on the three-volume anthology, and because our vol. 3 (purchased separately) didn't have the booklet (nor could the seller find one -- but it didn't claim to have one so no criticism there. Thank you for looking. ) i bought this book instead. As a supplement to the anthology, it works, and it even is an interesting read on its own. But be cautioned that unless you savor tons of triival beatles details and many repeat versions of recordings from their backlogs (these are the ones that didn't make the cuts, and most are less than stellar), then it can get a bit overwhelming. I don't blame any manufacturer or seller for my misunderstanding of what the anthology contained, and as i recall when it was first released, everybody was tripping over themselves with rave reviews. Call me underwhelmed and not so impressed, but at least we have this coveted collection without paying top dollar. And if i ever get on jeopardy! with a beatles category, i plan to dominate the category with a little help from the anthology.

Cecil replies: i have the album right here. You forget how big these things were — 12 inches by 12. (to be precise, 12-5/16 by 12-1/16. ) perfect for examining for hidden meanings while listening to the album on headphones. Can you do that with the dinky paper inserts on today’s cds? i think not. And there were hidden meanings, too. Beatles ’65 is a good example. There are four photos, representing the four seasons. (no, i don’t mean the group the four seasons. I mean the cycle of meteorological variation you might have noticed had you not been holed up in your room all the time listening to records. ) in the largest of the four photos, the beatles are holding umbrellas representing winter — winter as experienced in london, one feels obliged to say, not minneapolis. In the other photos they’re holding parasols and a knotted handkerchief for summer, brooms and leaves for autumn, and giant springs and a green shoot for spring. Springs for spring! the beatles have grasped the pun! truly these were multitalented guys.

The beatles were an english rock-pop band, started in liverpool , england in 1960. The members were john lennon , paul mccartney , george harrison , and ringo starr. Most people say they are the most successful and influential band in the history of popular music. The group were a main part of the creation of 1960s counterculture. They began as a skiffle and beat band and were influenced by 1950s american rock and roll. They later used parts of classical music and indian music.

Veteran musician, graphic artist and lifelong beatles pal klaus voormann returned to los angeles this week for the opening of a relatively short-term career-spanning exhibition of his artwork at the downtown-adjacent navel art gallery, where voormann mixed tuesday night with an assortment of music and art-world friends and admirers. Titled “it started in hamburg,” the show is billed as the first major exhibition of artwork by voormann, best known to music fans for his grammy-winning design for the beatles’ 1966 album “revolver. ”.

4.  The Beatles,  AKA “The White Album” (1968)

The beatles self-titled double-album masterpiece has been described as the most diverse record in pop history the photographic portraits taken by john kelly in the autumn of 1968 have themselves become iconic. On one hand, the beatles (aka the white album) is the most diverse record that the beatles, or probably any pop band in history, has ever made. On the other, as paul mccartney recalled, “that was the tension album. We were all in the midst of that psychedelic thing, or just coming out of it. In any case, it was weird. Never before had we recorded with beds in the studio and people visiting for hours on end: business meetings and all that. songs There was a lot of friction during that album. We were just about to break up, and that was tense in itself. ” lester bangs described it perfectly: “it was the first album by the beatles or in the history of rock by four solo artist in one band. ” in saying that bangs was simply following john lennon’s lead.

The Beatles [White Album]

Many musicians and record labels took full advantage of the allure of a great album cover. That included one of the most famous groups of all time, the beatles. The covers to such beatles albums as yesterday and today (1966) , sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club band (1967) and the simple cover of the white album (1968) established new standards for how covers could shock, impress, and make an artistic statement.

One day until: thanksgiving 2018, 50th anniversary of the white album, and 55 years since john fitzgerald kennedy was gunned down in the streets of dallas, texas, usa. It’s also 55 years to the day since the beatles’ second album (actually their first properly produced album), with the beatles, came out. That was just a coincidence, those last two happening 11/22/63.

The beatles’ let it be album was released in may 1970, but the material had been recorded over a year earlier, meaning that abbey road was the last set of material to be produced by all four beatles. In fact, the last session to see john, paul, george and ringo in the studio together was on 20 august 1969. It’s significant, then, that the photo chosen for the cover shows the four walking across the road with abbey road studios behind them - it’s the white building on the left of the picture. Lennon leads the group - which is also significant as he was the first member to permanently quit the beatles.

Many words have been written about this and the other beatles boxes, the mono cd, mono vinyl, stereo cd, stereo vinyl, but for what it comes down to is this, the 'us' albums box is fun! the sound is very good and the value, having both the mono and stereo mixes in one package makes it a killer deal. All one would have to do to 'complete' their beatle collection is to buy a few of the titles not included in this set, like the white album, and abbey road.

An adapted version of the beatles ‘ ‘sgt pepper’s lonely hearts club band’ record sleeve has been declared the world’s most valuable album cover. The modified artwork, which features pictures of music executives instead of the beatles themselves, has been valued at approximately £70,000. The survey conducted by record collector names five albums by the fab four in the top 10, with the first 10 copies of their 1968 album ‘the beatles’, also known as ‘the white album’, said to be worth £7,000 and coming in at second place.

In this, the 50th anniversary year of the beatles mug set the beatles gift the beatles travel mug conquering america, interest in the band is the highest it’s been in years, partially thanks to the event commemorating the fab four’s break into the states on the ed sullivan show. You’ll read many stories about the group and those times in the next few days, but you likely won’t see such a rare look at what it was like to work with the band recording the songs that today are considered modern standards. Here’s an excerpt from abbey road to ziggy stardust , the memoir of engineer/producer ken scott (which i was lucky enough to co-write), one of only five sound engineers ever to work with the band. It's a rare inside look at what it took to finish the band’s biggest selling album ever - the white album.

Q: as a teenager in the ’60s, i remember the beatles released an album in the u. S. That pictured them wearing white lab coats smeared with blood and holding dismembered plastic dolls and other body parts scattered at their feet. For some reason, it was covered over by another cover, which could be steamed and peeled it off to reveal the original “butcher” cover. My question is, why would they pose in such a controversial way, and was it u. S. Censorship that required a new cover?.

Beatles Albums Are Popular With Collectors

Sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club band (often shortened as sgt. Pepper) is the eighth studio album by the english rock band the beatles , released on 1 june 1967 on the parlophone label and produced by george martin. The album is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time, and has since been recognized as one of the most important albums in the history of popular music. The album cover art, by english pop artist peter blake , depicts the band posing in front of a collage of their favorite celebrities, and has been widely acclaimed and imitated. In fact, the sgt. Pepper album cover, which features over 70 famous people, won the grammy award for best album cover in 1968.

Robert freeman, who helped define the image of the beatles by taking the cover photographs for five of their early albums, including “with the beatles” and “rubber soul,” died on nov. 6 in a hospital in london. He was 82. His former wife tiddy rowan said the cause was pneumonia. Mr. Freeman’s association with the beatles was relatively brief — about three years — but memorable. He shot his first album cover for them in 1963 as their popularity was soaring, then joined them in 1964 on their tour of the united states; he photographed his last in late 1965, for “rubber soul,” which drew attention for its distinctive distorted picture.

Beatles Albums and Why People Collect Them

Hey jude (original title: the beatles again) is a 1970 collection of non-album singles and b-sides by the beatles. It included " i should have known better " and " can't buy me love ", two singles released by capitol records whose only previous american album appearance had been on the a hard day's night soundtrack album, which had been released by united artists records. The beatles anthology is a television documentary , a three-volume set of double albums, and a book describing the history of the beatles. 4 The Beatles - 16 Million Copies Sold

March 30, 2017 9:00 am edt it was 50 years ago today that the sgt. Pepper’s lonely hearts club band photo shoot took place. Thursday marks the 50th anniversary of the taking of the famous photo that would grace the cover of the album that features tracks such as “when i’m sixty four,” “with a little help from my friends,” “lucy in the sky with diamonds. ” the album — which took a little over three months to produce, over four to six sessions a week — sold 2. 5 million copies in its first three months, time reported in a 1967 cover story , after it hit record stores on june 1, 1967.

Released june 14th, 1965 pulled off the ultimate feat in 1964. Since they had passed up the opportunity to release any beatles music in america in 1963, it made available to them enough music to fill a total of four albums the following year, all of which sold in the millions. In fact, it is estimated that capitol sold over 15 million records throughout the year. And this was without hardly touching their first british album "please please me. ".

Who were the members of the Beatles?

Members of singing group the beatles : john lennon, paul mccartney, george harrison and ringo starr. The beatles were an english rock band from liverpool. With members john lennon , paul mccartney , george harrison and ringo starr , the group is often considered the most influential band of the rock era. While active between 1960 and 1970, the group recorded hundreds of songs, with their "main catalogue" consisting of 213 songs, which include 188 originals and 25 covers. Since their break-up, a further 41 covers the beatles recorded as a group have been released.

How did the Beatles become a band?

Had it not been for a very tight deadline, the now-iconic cover design for the beatles' classic album abbey road might have appeared quite differently today, according to john kosh , the former creative director for the band's label apple records. Back in 1969, he was conceiving the look for the next beatles album titled get back when he later found out that it was being replaced on the release schedule by a new record called abbey road. Now kosh had to quickly come up with a brand-new design before the record hit the shops. “i suddenly found myself, 'by god, i've got to do this and get it out on wednesday?’” he recalls today. “that's how it all happened. ”.

Formed around the nucleus of lennon and mccartney, who first performed together in liverpool in 1957, the group grew out of a shared enthusiasm for american rock and roll. Like most early rock-and-roll figures, lennon, a guitarist and singer, and mccartney, a bassist and singer, were largely self-taught as musicians. Precocious composers, they gathered around themselves a changing cast of accompanists, adding by the end of 1957 harrison, a lead guitarist, and then, in 1960 for several formative months, sutcliffe, a promising young painter who brought into the band a brooding sense of bohemian style. After dabbling in skiffle , a jaunty sort of folk music popular in britain in the late 1950s, and assuming several different names (the quarrymen, the silver beetles, and, finally, the beatles), the band added a drummer, best, and joined a small but booming “beat music” scene, first in liverpool and then, during several long visits between 1960 and 1962, in hamburg —another seaport full of sailors thirsty for american rock and roll as a backdrop for their whiskey and womanizing.

Here is the beatles famous album cover for help! the album cover features the group with their arms positioned to spell out a word in flag semaphore, leading most to assume that the band is spelling out the word help. According to cover photographer robert freeman, “i had the idea of semaphore spelling out the letters h. E. L. P. But when we came to do the shot the arrangement of the arms with those letters didn’t look good. So we decided to improvise and ended up with the best graphic positioning other arms. ”.

Despite writing a number of their best songs (‘here comes the sun’ amongst them), harrison was always underrated during the beatles’ tenure, pigeonholed as “the quiet one”. But all things must pass, released after the band split, blew that reputation apart. A brilliant, heartrending collection of ballads, the record is as strong as anything that harrison wrote for the fab four. Every inch of it trembles.

Whatsapp it’s one thing for an album to come along and press itself so deeply into the culture that little feels the same after its arrival, but what are the chances that that same album would have the most iconic lp artwork of all time? so it goes with the beatles ‘ sgt. Pepper’s lonely hearts club band and its wonderful swirl of visuals, ranging from that most distinguished assembly of personalities on its front cover courtesy of pop artists peter blake and jann haworth, to some sleeve work by the dutch design team the fool, to michael cooper’s photographs, to the grab-bag of cut-out treasures that accompanied the album. Art dealer robert fraser helmed the proceedings as art director, with the most legendary cover-art shoot in rock history transpiring 50th years ago on march 30th. The cover was lavishly pricey to produce, but it solidified the beatles ’ mythic status for all time.

If please please me and with the beatles had marked the band as a talent to watch, their third album — a soundtrack to their movie of the same name — raised the stakes even higher, from that mysterious opening guitar chord onward. Writing a full album by themselves for the first time, lennon and mccartney reeled off a raft of pitch-perfect ballads (''if i fell,'' ''i'll be back'') and infectious up-tempo numbers (''can't buy me love''). The resulting hook-fests sounded just like the beatles that the world already adored, only tighter, stickier, better.

Sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club band , released in june 1967 as the summer of love dawned, was the definitive psychedelic soundtrack. Or, at least, so it was perceived at the time: subsequent critics have painted the album as an uneven affair, given a conceptual unity via its brilliant multi-tracked overdubs, singalong melodies, and fairy tale-ish lyrics. Others remain convinced, as millions did at the time, that it represented pop's greatest triumph, or indeed an evolution of pop into art with a capital a. In addition to mining all manner of roots influences, the musicians were also picking up vibes from indian music, avant-garde electronics, classical, music hall, and more. When the beatles premiered their hippie anthem "all you need is love" as part of a worldwide tv broadcast, they had been truly anointed as spokespersons for their generation (a role they had not actively sought), and it seemed they could do no wrong.

The beatles never will be topped. Invented the template of "modern" pop rock and modern recording. Permanent cultural phenomenon. No other band with this level of commercial success and this many number one hits was this adventurous and willing to throw out the formula again and again. Created the concept of "serious" popular music. Beemed the message of love to the entire planet via the first satellite transmission in 1967; the planet still needs to listen. Their songwriting will never be eclipsed. As a singing and songwriting partnership there is no better than lennon and mccartney; in any other band george harrison would be leader and main songwriter. Not the best "live" act but they broke up right before modern touring began (with the stones '69 tour).

Please please me is the 14-song debut album by the english rock band the beatles. The parlophone label rush-released the album on on march 22, 1963 in the united kingdom to capitalize on the success of the singles please please me and love me do. Eight of the fourteen songs on the album were written by the team of john lennon and paul mccartney , displaying proof of what rolling stone later called the beatles' groundbreaking invention "of the self-contained rock band, writing their own hits and playing their own instruments".

The cut-out of hitler set off to the side of the photoshoot. Clearly, the beatles’ album was dedicated to satanist aleister crowley. It was released 20 years, nearly to the day, after crowley’s death in 1947, and its title song began with the lyrics, “it was twenty years ago today…” the album’s cover featured a picture of crowley.

Released in the uk on 5 october 1962, and in the u. S. On 27 april 1964. Reached no. 1 in the u. S. For one week on 30 may 1964. This is the version released in the u. S. With ringo starr on tambourine and session musician andy white on drums. First included on introducing the beatles (1964) and please please me (1963), depending on the territory.

Ask your friends to name the biggest hoax of 1969 and you might hear the "paul is dead" rumor. For much of the late 1960s, hearsay about the beatles had been building up until the strange meme hit newspapers everywhere: that paul mccartney fatally crashed his aston martin in 1966 and for years had been replaced by an impostor. Conspiracists based their claim on a car accident report involving one of mccartney’s cars. They also note years’ worth of clues found in song lyrics and on album covers ranging from sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club band to the magic mystery tour.

‘money (that’s what i want)’ with the beatles, the follow-up to the beatles’ debut album please please me , consolidated their position as the united kingdom’s number one pop act. The album was released eight months to the day after please please me, and was an instant hit. Although no singles were taken from it, with the beatles came three months after ‘she loves you’ became a smash, and just seven days before the beatles conquered the world with ‘i want to hold your hand’.
